Reading Writing Research

How do you read research? Writing research at that?
Hayes, et al. provide "some guidance" for reading research reports, but it was meant primarily for the studies they compiled in the volume, Reading Empirical Research Studies: The Rhetoric of Research. Of course, the editors are smart enough not to propose a universal set of guidelines for an appraisal of writing research. Each research responds to its own set of internal and external dynamics, epistemologically and methodologically.
If not a set of guidelines, then, can we develop some pointers or questions, sort of a rhetorical toolbox, to guide our reading? What would such a toolbox contain?
